This viral video, “you need to get off facebook,” is making the rounds of the twittersphere/blogoweb/intertubes lately. It’s pretty much the usual “Facebook is contributing to the downfall of society” argument, repackaged with a cute face. Know what? There are lots of things inhibiting our society from achieving its full potential. Just to name a few, there’s the right-wing hate machine, corporate greed, religious conservatism, warmongering, institutionalized discrimination, and complete distrust of anyone who thinks. Even though I don’t often have the highest opinion of Zuckerberg or the SF/Silicon Valley startup culture, Facebook is pretty small potatoes compared to all of these things.
So my friend Emily in Washington, DC made this awesome response (see above). She’s right, you know. When you say you’re not judging, and then you proceed to call everyone “social perverts,” you are, in fact, judging.
